Frequently asked questions
What is in the EXIF data of a photo?
Camera model, date taken, exposure, orientation – and on many phones the exact location as GPS coordinates. Anyone who receives the photo can read these details.
How do I know whether my photo contains a location?
The tool reads the EXIF details in your browser and shows whether there is a GPS section. It does not display the coordinates themselves and does not store them anywhere.
How is the data removed?
The photo is redrawn and saved again in the browser. The browser does not write any EXIF details along with it. Orientation is applied first so the image does not end up on its side.
Does the photo change?
Size and format stay the same. JPEG and WebP are recompressed at high quality; the file may get slightly larger or smaller. The original on your device stays unchanged.
Do messengers not remove the location anyway?
Some do when sending as a photo, many do not when sending as a file – and email, cloud links or classified ad portals usually do not either. If you want to be sure, remove the details yourself beforehand.
