Connect SafeDoc as a drive

Work with your files right in Explorer, Finder or an app – like a USB stick. No extra program needed.

What you need

The drive is included in these plans: Plus, Pro, Familie, Business, Business Pro. Paid plans can be booked soon. The free plan does not include the drive.
  1. Sign in and open Einstellungen → Sicherheit → App-Passwörter (Settings → Security → App passwords).
  2. Enter a name, for example “Laptop”, and click “App-Passwort anlegen” (Create app password). We will ask for your password once more first.
  3. Copy the app password. We only show it this one time.
  4. Address: https://safedoc.de/dav/ · User name: your email address · Password: the app password.
Your normal password deliberately does not work for the drive. Otherwise someone with your password could get past two-factor sign-in.

Windows 10 und 11

  1. Open File Explorer and click “This PC” on the left.
  2. Click “…” (See more) at the top, then “Map network drive”.
  3. Choose a drive letter. Under “Folder” enter https://safedoc.de/dav/.
  4. Tick “Connect using different credentials” and click “Finish”.
  5. Enter your email address and the app password. Tick “Remember my credentials”.

Good to know

By default Windows only downloads files up to about 50 MB through the drive. For larger files, use the browser.

macOS (Finder)

  1. Open Finder and choose “Go” → “Connect to Server…” (⌘ K).
  2. Enter https://safedoc.de/dav/ and click “Connect”.
  3. Choose “Registered User”, enter your email address and the app password. Your keychain can save it if you like.

Linux (GNOME Dateien)

  1. Open “Files” and click “Other Locations”.
  2. Under “Connect to Server” enter davs://safedoc.de/dav/.
  3. Sign in with your email address and app password.

iPhone, iPad and Android

Apple’s Files app only connects to SMB servers, not WebDAV. On iPhone, iPad and Android you therefore need a file manager app that supports “WebDAV”. Add a new WebDAV server there:

  • Address: https://safedoc.de/dav/ (with https)
  • User name: your email address
  • Password: a separate app password for this device

We do not recommend a specific app – we have not tested them.

Worth knowing

  • The drive shows “Meine Dateien” (My files), your organisations’ storage and “Mit mir geteilt” (Shared with me). The vault does not appear: it is end-to-end encrypted, only the browser can open it.
  • Deleting moves items to the trash. You can restore them there in the browser.
  • Saving a file again creates a new version. The old one is kept (versions depend on your plan).
  • Uploads have the same limits as in the browser. On top, the drive allows 20 GB per hour. Once reached, it continues at the next full hour.
  • Lost a device? Revoke its app password under Settings → Security → App passwords. “Das war ich nicht” (That wasn’t me) and resetting your password revoke all app passwords.
